A commissioned portrait for a surprise birthday gift painted on a deep edged canvas. Firstly, the preliminary drawing was transferred to a lemon yellow base before loosely blocking in larger areas. Gradually layers of texture and finer details were added to build up realism, with a tree positioned to unify the image and add a sense of proportion.
